THOUSANDS of runners are set to lace up for a picturesque race around the Wee County this month.

Entries have already exceeded last year's for Alloa Half Marathon with a 40th anniversary race to go ahead on Sunday, March 17.

One of the fastest courses in Scotland, the major event is attracting people from all corners of the UK and beyond.

Alloa Round Table is organising the event, which serves as a major fundraiser with money to be donated to Wee County charities and good causes.

Some of those entering will no doubt be aiming to set personal bests, while others might be eyeing up the 64.51 men's course record of Tsegezab Woldemichael or the 73.19 women's best from Sandra Branney.

Often described as the spring board of the year's big races, the event is again supported by AHC Tools as the main sponsor, offering vast expertise in providing all the plan and equipment required on the day.

The race will start at Lornshill Academy at 9am with the course taking competitors around the town before heading up to Sauchie, Fishcross and to Tillicoultry past Devon Village.

A sharp left at Tilly will put runners on the fast-track and see them go through the Hillfoots with a turn back towards Tullibody between Alva and Menstrie.

Participants will be making the final push through Tullibody before reaching the finish line back at Lornshill Academy.

It is expected entries will close soon with only a few hundred places left at the time of writing.

Nick Smith is Alloa Round Table's main man behind the event and he will be supported by a range of volunteers who will be on hand to ensure the day goes smoothly.

Nick said: “It's good to see the numbers continue to grow every year.

“The Alloa Half Marathon is very much the springboard for the year for a lot of marathon runners.

“The continued support that our runners and volunteers provide allows us to donate money to a lot of very worthwhile local causes.

“I can’t thank them enough for this.”

Indeed, the organisation was able to donate more than £15,000 in the Wee County last year.

A number of road closures will be in place to allow the race to go ahead safely.

This will include the closure of Tullibody road from Tullibody through to past Lornshill Academy from 7am to 12.30pm on the day.
